"The J. A. Riggs family’s donation in excess of $1 million was made in honor of John A. Riggs, Jr. Their donation was the largest private charitable contribution ever given to a municipal chamber of commerce for an undertaking of this type.

"But, for John A. Riggs, Jr. and his family, such types of undertakings have been the norm rather than the exception. Community service was more than just a hobby for Riggs, who served as president of the Little Rock Chamber during 1955. It was his way of giving back to the state and county that had given him and his family so much.

"During his chamber term as president, Riggs was instrumental in raising money to buy land for two monumental projects that have immeasurably benefited central Arkansans: the Little Rock Air Force Base in Jacksonville and Lake Maumelle. Riggs was also active in various leadership roles for various community and state organizations throughout his lifetime that benefited a host of sectors including education, transportation, waterways, and infrastructure and children.

"'I would like to take credit for all the good things, but it must be confessed that most of the credit should go to those responsible,' he said during a speech on April 18, 1990 after receiving the William F. Rector Memorial award by Fifty for the Future for his civic achievement. 'With my father’s leadership and his determination to make something out of me, with my mother’s unfailing patience, and with my wife Martha’s prayers, combined with the efforts of all our loyal and dedicated employees and associates, how could I fail?'

“'I have a great sense of gratitude to the state of Arkansas, to Pulaski County and to Little Rock and North Little Rock. Whatever I have done to further economic growth, to help raise money for worthwhile causes and to make financial contributions to many fine institutions is far less than my desires.'

"J. A. Riggs Tractor Co. has been the primary dealer of Caterpillar equipment in Arkansas since 1928. Now in its fourth generation of family ownership, Riggs employs more than 600 people statewide. The dealership is based in Little Rock and operates branch stores in Fort Smith, West Memphis, Texarkana, McGehee, Jonesboro and Fordyce, plus several rental stores." - From John A.
