Public Transportation
Central Arkansas Transit (CAT) is a regional transit agency governed by a 12-member board that is appointed by local elected officials. Serving the jurisdictions of Little Rock, North Little Rock, Maumelle, Sherwood and portions of Pulaski County, CAT has 176 full-time employees managing and operating a fleet of 78 buses and paratransit vehicles and five electric streetcars. There are currently 21 fixed routes and three commuter express routes in the system.
CAT's paratransit division, LINKS, provides curb-to-curb service for persons with disabilities, averaging 5,000 monthly passenger trips.
The River Rail Streetcar Line, also a division of CAT, began revenue operation on November 1, 2004 and has served more than 500,000 passengers in its first three years of operation. River Rail crosses the Arkansas River on the Main Street Bridge to serve the downtowns of Little Rock and North Little Rock. A track extension to the Clinton Presidential Center and Heifer International was completed in February 2007.
The bus system averages more than 8,000 passenger trips each weekday and collects more than $1 million annually in fare box revenue. Special fares are available for students 18 and under, senior citizens and persons with disabilities. CAT's River Cities Travel Center is located at 310 East Capitol Avenue in Little Rock.
