The
St. Vincent Network of Care
While
St. Vincent is perhaps best known for the medical center
in Little Rock, St. Vincent Health System provides health
care throughout central Arkansas at a number of locations.
These include St. Vincent Doctors Hospital, also in Little
Rock, St. Vincent Medical Center/North and St. Vincent Rehabilitation
Hospital in Sherwood, and St. Anthony’s Healthcare Center
in Morrilton. In addition, a large network of primary
care clinics extends St. Vincent’s outreach into central
Arkansas’ neighborhoods and business community.
St.
Vincent also provides skilled nursing care, as well as therapy,
education and support through the Visiting Nurses Association.
The VNA has provided home health care to patients in Arkansas
for more than 60 years. This program pioneered the
development of specialty treatment areas, each staffed by
a team with dedicated training in that area. One of
these specialty areas is Diabetes Treatment and Education,
which is accredited by the American Diabetes Association.
Over
the years, St. Vincent Health System has earned a reputation
for exceptional care in many diverse fields, particularly
in select specialties which are among the organization’s
primary focus areas: heart, orthopedic, spine, stroke, vascular,
seniors’ and women’s services. Each of these centers
of excellence is guided by the same central commitment to
quality that is a St. Vincent hallmark.
The
Jack Stephens Heart Center at St. Vincent is at the heart
of St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center and offers heart
care unlike any other. By utilizing advanced imaging
equipment available in only a handful of hospitals anywhere
in the world, the Jack Stephens Heart Center at St. Vincent
is a hospital within a hospital. From advanced diagnostic
routines to the latest surgical procedures to heart health
education, St. Vincent offers a comprehensive continuum
of care.
The
Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation and Health Management
Centers offer patients the opportunity to improve their
health through exercise, education and counseling.
These programs teach how to change or modify unhealthy habits
to increase fitness and/or reduce risk factors for heart
disease.
A
specialized Chest Pain Center provides rapid diagnosis and
treatment of heart attacks with advanced interventional
drugs. Every second counts in a heart attack, and
the Center’s treatment protocols result in faster response
times well above the national averages.
Through
innovative outpatient intravenous medication therapy and
patient/family education programs, the Congestive Heart
Failure program helps participants improve their quality
of life while living with heart failure. The St. Vincent
staff remains in close contact with patients and families
to help them make wise choices.
St.
Vincent Infirmary Medical Center has received five-star
ratings for clinical quality and performance excellence
in total knee and total hip replacement, hip fracture repair,
and back and neck surgery with and without spinal fusion,
according to a new study released in 2005 by HealthGrades,
the nation’s leading health care quality company.
St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center is ranked number one
in Arkansas and is in the top five percent in the nation
for overall orthopedic services and joint replacement surgery.
St.
Vincent has specifically designed a health clinic with services
for seniors in mind. Trained professionals help patients
maintain both their health and independence as they grow
older. Early and accurate diagnosis of a health problem
can make it easier to treat. Each individual has his
or her own health care team working to coordinate all the
necessary services. The Senior Health Clinic features
primary geriatric care, referrals to medical specialists
and hospital services, help in filing insurance, coordination
of community services, and on-site specialty programs for
nutrition counseling, foot care, fitness assessments, medication
interaction and wound care. The clinic’s goal is to
help patients remain as independent as possible.
St.
Vincent is also the first in the state to create a Memory
Center dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of memory
loss. Using Positron Emission Tomography, commonly
known as a PET scan, the St. Vincent Memory Center provides
comprehensive evaluation and treatment for people with memory
loss. Using a multidisciplinary team approach, each
patient is evaluated to determine the reasons for memory
loss. Then a personalized plan of care aimed at achieving
the best possible memory function is developed.
St.
Vincent Doctors Hospital has created the most comprehensive
center in the state devoted to the unique needs of women,
the St. Vincent Center for Women and Children.
For
expectant moms, St. Vincent provides a broad array of obstetric
care in a family-friendly environment featuring comfortable,
homelike suites for labor, delivery and recovery.
The Well Baby Nursery and specialized Neonatal Intensive
Care Unit provide expert care for every baby delivered.
At
the St. Vincent Breast Center a physician with special training
in diagnosing breast disease is dedicated to the center
full time, in order to assure the highest quality of care.
Screening mammograms, diagnostic- mammograms, ultrasounds
and other interventions are provided by highly trained professionals.
If a problem is detected, experienced surgeons are available
to offer the best treatment options.
The
scope of commitment to provide the finest patient care modern
medicine has to offer includes investing in technology that
speeds the diagnostic process. St. Vincent has long
been an innovator in the area of medical technology.
St. Vincent was the first in the state to use Positron Emission
Tomography (PET) in the diagnosis of cancer and other illnesses.
St.
Vincent is also the first in Arkansas to have a medical
cyclotron on site. The cyclotron produces radioisotopes
used with PET in the diagnosis of cancer. Previously,
this material was flown in from out of state, and depending
on factors such as weather, patients might have had to wait
longer for appointments if conditions were not favorable
for flying. Now, with this resource located on campus,
patients treated here have the advantage of PET scans more
readily available to them.
The
goal of providing the best health care possible extends
from specialized, innovative areas of medical care all the
way to community outreach programs staffed by volunteer
physicians and nurses who aid the needy.
General
programs of care include emergency services, diabetes treatment,
cancer treatment, home health services, senior health services,
physical therapy, psychiatric care, weight reduction surgery
(which has helped thousands of people overcome lifelong
effects of severe obesity), as well as many others.
New
Outlook, a recovery program for cancer survivors, provides
counseling, wigs, prosthetics and bras free of charge regardless
of where treatment is received.

UAMS
Medical Center
UAMS
Medical Center combines the resources of a state-of-the-art
hospital, outpatient center, the clinics of the Arkansas
Cancer Research Center, the Harvey & Bernice Jones Eye
Institute, the Donald W. Reynolds Center on Aging, the Myeloma
Institute for Research and Therapy, and the Jackson T. Stephens
Spine and Neurosciences Institute. Because of its
role in education and research, UAMS Medical Center provides
many services not typically found at a community-based hospital.
And because they are faculty members in the UAMS College
of Medicine, UAMS Medical Center physicians are apprised
of the latest in research and technology. This enables
patient care to remain on the forefront of new procedures
and technologies.
In
fact, patients come to UAMS from around the world to receive
cutting-edge, comprehensive medical care. Here they’ll
find a medical center with the most advanced diagnostic
and treatment equipment, a state-of-the-art emergency/trauma
department, one of the nation’s leading cancer treatment
centers, the number 1 treatment center in the world for
multiple myeloma, a rare cancer of the blood, one of only
20 free-standing ophthalmology research and treatment centers
in the country and a world-renowned center for skull-base
surgery. UAMS also has the state’s only primary-care
center for geriatrics and the state’s only gamma knife radiosurgery
center. The hospital’s state-of-the-art intensive
care unit, equipped with rooms designed so that medical
personnel can view patients and review their vital signs
without disturbing them, has become a model for the country.
At
UAMS Medical Center, the knowledge and experience of a wide
range of specialties can be quickly applied to a patient’s
problem. This is where many Arkansas health care firsts
were achieved, including the first bypass heart surgery,
the first bone marrow transplant, the first kidney transplant,
the first treatment of sickle cell disease, the first corneal
transplant, the first breast reconstruction surgery, the
first outpatient chemotherapy, the first in-vitro fertilization
program, the first and only skull-base surgery and the first
laparoscopically implanted stomach pacemaker and the first
endoscopic spine surgery.
Every
year since 1996, U.S. News & World Report has
listed UAMS Medical Center as one of America’s best hospitals.
No other hospital in Arkansas has ever been named to this
prestigious list. And when leading physicians across
the country were asked to name the best in their field,
137 of the 239 Arkansas physicians chosen as The Best Doctors
in America were on the UAMS faculty.
