In late 2014, Google announced that they would be moving towards "favoring" mobile-enabled websites in their mobile-based search results. That makes sense. If I'm on a smartphone searching for a topic, product, or company, finding results better formatted for mobile viewing is totally understandable. Given the fact that for the first time ever, in May 2015, Google revealed that over 50% of all search is via mobile devices, this is a really big deal.
Think about this for a second, more people are now on their phone or tablet, hanging out in a restaurant, coffee shop or store, sitting in a classroom, or sitting (hopefully not driving) in their car and searching for a product, service, or place, than sitting in front of a computer. Business owners and marketers take note, your customer is now everywhere.
What if your business has not or is not focusing on mobile customers today? What if you haven't given them a good mobile search experience that helps them to understand who you are, where you are, and what you do while on the go? First, don't panic. Don't let this become a daunting and expensive task to mobile-enable your business; it's not. For most companies, less than $500 can get your existing site mobile enabled. That gives you the best chance of being noticed on Google in mobile searches and back in front of your prospect and customers.
How to check for mobile compatibility
Check the mobile friendliness of your site using Google's Mobile-Friendly evaluation tool: google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly
If your site's not mobile-friendly
- Run a Google Analytics report (or other analytics installed) on your site to determine how much of your traffic comes from mobile search.
- Check with your web developer, internal or external, to get their opinion on the best resolution.
- Don't panic. While this may not be a good situation today for your business, it is correctable with quick and appropriate action.
