Sanitary Sewer System

Little Rock Wastewater Utility is publicly owned and operated by the City of Little Rock under the direction of the Sewer Committee and an appointed board. The utility serves the city and suburban areas with two secondary treatment plants that discharge into the Arkansas River. The first plant, on the northeastern edge of the city adjacent to Little Rock National Airport, has a permitted capacity of 36 million gallons per day. A second treatment plant in the Little Rock Port area went online in June 1983 with a permitted capacity of 16 million gallons per day, along with about 40 miles of connecting sewer lines to allow service in the southwestern portion of the city. The entire system is now operating with 25 percent reserve capacity and provides pollution reduction equal to or greater than required by federal and state requirement

North Little Rock operates three secondary treatment plants with a combined capacity of 23 million gallons per day.

Benton’s secondary treatment facilities are capable of processing 11.6 million gallons per day and a surplus capacity of three million gallons per day.

Bryant operates a primary treatment plant with a capacity of three million gallons per day and surplus capacity of 1.5 million gallons per day.

Cabot’s sewer system has a capacity of 1.8 million gallons per day and operates with a surplus capacity of one million gallons per day.

Carlisle has a capacity of 850,000 gallons per day and 4,000 customers. The sewer system operates with a surplus of 400,000 gallons per day.

onway’s waste water system has a 12.5 million gallon capacity with a 10.62 million gallon surplus capacity.

Jacksonville’s secondary treatment facilities operate at an average capacity of 6.3 million gallons per day but can accommodate up to 12 million gallons per day. Surplus capacity is 2.5 million gallons per day.
Lonoke’s sewer facilities operate at a capacity of two million gallons per day and a surplus capacity of 2.5 million gallons per day.

Lonoke’s sewer facilities operate at a capacity of two million gallons per day and a surplus capacity of 2.5 million gallons per day.

Maumelle’s sewer system is operated by Maumelle Water Management and has an average capacity of 1.75 million gallons per day. However, due to an existing equalization basin, peak flows of up to three million gallons per day can be accommodated. The entire system is being upgraded to increase capacity, and these upgrades are expected to be complete by 2007.

Sherwood’s primary treatment facilities have a capacity of 2.7 million gallons per day.

Sewer rates are based on water usage and are a separate charge itemized on water bills. Rate schedules for the various systems may be obtained from the municipal wastewater departments.
