Little Rock, Big Hearts
We know — we’re not the first place that comes to mind when you think “big city,” and quite frankly, we’re ok with that.
What we lack in quantity, we exceed in quality.
Southern hospitality is alive and well in more ways than one:
Arkansas is a state of fiercely generous residents, leading as third in the nation in regards to charitable giving.
Compared to the national average of 2.2 percent, residents in Pulaski County give 3.5 percent of their income to charity — a total of over $400 million in 2015 alone.
Our rates of giving aren’t surprising, considering the 2,000 nonprofits that call Little Rock home, making it the perfect place to work, play and give.
International impact starts here:
Heifer International is one of the many nonprofits that benefit from the generosity of Arkansans. Heifer has several different initiatives that work heavily in Africa, Asia and the Americas that seek to grow and sustain the economy of rural areas.
Particularly in downtown Little Rock, the Heifer Urban Farm (located behind Heifer headquarters) directly reflects the community-supported agriculture (CSA) model they use to improve communities around the globe, giving visitors a tangible understanding of the work they do worldwide, as well as the ways Heifer combats hunger in the central Arkansas community.
We keep it local too:
Little Rock also has nonprofit organizations that seek to target the local community. As an affiliate of Baptist Health Medical Center, the Baptist Health Foundation serves the families of patients through several outreach programs. The Psalm 91 Fund, The Baby Project, and Grateful Patient Program all seek to give back to the community in a variety of ways — from nursing scholarships and caregiver recognition programs, to NICU technology donations and housing patients’ families — BH Foundation has an abundance of opportunities for donating time and money to the surrounding community.
We are an undeniably exciting city, but at its core, the heart of Little Rock beats for giving back to the community, which is echoed in everything we do. Click here for a list of the volunteer opportunities waiting for you in the Rock.
